Art Guild sees acrylic demo

Bert Seabourn will demonstrate acrylic painting techniques with a figurative ballerina at Stillwater Art Guild’s monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Monday in the auditorium of the Sheerar Center, Seventh and Duncan.

A sculptor, author, artist, philosopher and international traveler, Seabourn sold his first piece of art to King Features Syndicate in 1946 while in the eighth grade in Purcell.

He joined the U.S. Navy and served as a Navy journalist and artist. After his discharge, he and his family returned to Oklahoma, and he worked for Oklahoma Natural Gas and Electric Company for 23 years as an artist and art director.

During the 1950s and ’60s, he studied art in evening classes at Oklahoma City University for six years. In 1978, he resigned from OG&E to pursue a full-time career in fine art.

His honors include being named Master Artist by the Five Civilized Tribes Museum in Muskogee in 1976 and having a 23-foot bronze sculpture, “Wind Walker,” placed in the Attorney General Office Building in the Oklahoma State Complex in Oklahoma City in 1997.

He received the Governor’s Art Award from Gov. George Nigh in 1981 and Oklahoma’s Living Treasure Award.

Seabourn’s art is found in private and corporate collections including the Vatican; China’s National Palace Museum in Taipei, Taiwan; Moscow State University Branch in Ulyanovsk, Russia; the American Embassy in London, England; the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C.; the President Gerald R. Ford Library Collection in Ann Arbor, Mich.; the President George and Barbara Bush Collection in Houston, Texas; and the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.

Seabourn has taught watercolor, acrylic, mixed media and printmaking workshops for high schools, universities and art organizations in several states. He currently teaches acrylic painting at the City Arts Center in Oklahoma City.

The meeting is open to the public. First-time visitors to the Stillwater Art Guild may attend free as the guest of a member. There is a $5 charge for other guests.
