Artist’s painting in juried show

A new painting by Velma Sanders, Stillwater Art Guild president, was juried in the National Oklahoma Friendly art show.

The jury for the show chose to include her painting “Wind River Wyoming.”

The show opens with a reception today from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Istvan Gallery, 1218 N. Western, Oklahoma City. The reception will include refreshments and music.

The show drew 103 artists from across the United States who presented works.

A panel of four art professionals and the show judge accepted 112 from 73 artists.

The show spotlights an Oklahoma native, Poteet Victory, as the final judge.

Sanders said she finds her subjects in scenes she happens to notice, experiences she has had or people she sees in her daily life.

Her paintings include landscapes, still lifes, animals, florals and portraits.

Her philosophy is expressed by the excitement and joy that she experiences in creation that is unique and ever-changing, she said, adding that she tries to capture the mood, power and ever-changing drama of nature.

She has taken workshops from John Potoschnik, Ann Templeton, Gay Faulkenberry, Sam Echols, Curt Walters and many other local and nationwide artists.

Sanders has received numerous awards and extensive commissions for portraits. She has been a member of the Stillwater Art Guild since 1984.

She also belongs to the Ponca City Art Association and the Oklahoma Art guild. She maintains her studio and gallery at Countryside Studio, 4421 S. Husband. Its Web site is at .
