Stillwater Art Guild to see silk painting demo

Karoll Kyle will demonstrate silk painting techniques for the Stillwater Art Guild at 7 p.m. Monday in the auditorium of the Sheerar Center, Seventh and Duncan.

Kyle, who has called Oklahoma home for 17 years, grew up on a farm near Laurens, Iowa. She began her love affair with fabrics as a young child watching her mother and grandmother turn yardage into one garment after another.

“I always wanted to make my own creations, and have followed my dream with fabric, sewing machine and paint brush for the past fifty plus years,” she said.

Her awards and shows include the 2004 Spirit of Silk, City Arts Center, Oklahoma City; 2005 Fiber Works, City Arts Center, Oklahoma City; 2005 Integris-Baptist Cancer Center Art Show, Merit of Excellence Award, Oklahoma City; 2006 TAG Show, The Colonies Art Gallery, Merit of Excellence Award; and 2005-2007 Gallery One on Paseo, Fall Art Walk, Oklahoma City.

Ten years ago, she saw a silk painting demo on HGTV that changed everything.

“I was so intrigued that I went straight to the library and found a company in California that carried silks and silk dyes. Several months later, City Arts offered a silk painting class by Irma Braun-Hampton and I was hooked,” she said.

Recently, she said, she ventured into watercolor classes and found it exciting as those techniques would add a new dimension to her silk creations.

The meeting is open to the public. First-time visitors to Stillwater Art Guild may attend free as the guest of a member. There is a $5 charge for other guests.
