Art classes set in Cushing

Susan Brinker - NewsPress

Winter art classes are under way in the Lachenmeyer Arts Center, Cushing.

Adult classes include:

• Painting. Students will explore a variety of painting techniques in acrylic, oil or watercolor. Bring a photograph of your choice to work from or they have still life objects available. This class is $25 for seven weeks. Classes started Jan. 7 and run from 9:30 a.m. until noon. No class will be held on President’s Day, Feb. 18.

• Pottery. Come explore the possibilities of clay. Create your own individual pottery with handbuilding techniques or wheel throwing. Open to all levels. Fee includes clay and glazes and cost is $30 for eight weeks.

The evening class began Jan. 8 and is held from 6:30 until 9. The morning class began Jan. 9 and runs from 9:30 until noon.

• Raku. Students will explore handbuilding techniques in clay and fire their pots in a raku kiln. The raku process produces a smoked clay body and lustrous glazes. Classes started Jan. 9 and run from 1 until 3:30 p.m. Cost is $30 for eight weeks.

• Watercolor. Learn a variety of watercolor techniques. Dry brush, wet in wet and color mixing will be explored. Classes started Jan. 10 and run from 6:30 until 9 p.m. Cost is $25 for eight weeks.

• Several basket making workshops are also planned. Lee Rose will be instructing students in the art of basketmaking.

Students will construct and complete their own basket in each workshop. Students must enroll at least 10 days prior to the workshop so that the necessary supplies can be ordered. The cost is $20 and students should also bring a sack lunch.

Workshops begin at 9 a.m. and usually end between 1 and 2 p.m. Two classes have already run but future dates include Feb. 5, Feb. 9, March 1 and March 4.

Many children’s art classes are also available and allow your child to express their artistic creativity in many art mediums. Making art is often not a clean process, so parents please dress your young artists appropriately.

• Preschool Art starts Jan. 25. The class will meet for five weeks and a parent or guardian needs to attend class with their child. There is no fee. The morning class will meet from 11 until 11:45 and the afternoon class will meet from 1 until 1:45.

• Kindergarten and first graders meet on Mondays. Classes begin Jan. 21 and go for five weeks from 4 until 5 p.m. Cost is $5 and classes will not meet on President’s Day, Feb. 18.

• Second, third and fourth grade classes begin Jan. 23 from 4 until 5 p.m. Cost is $5 for five weeks.

• Handbuilding with clay for grades fifth through eighth will begin Jan. 25 from 4 until 5 p.m. The class will cost $6 for five weeks.

The center will provide the materials, paints and ink but you may want to bring photographs or personal memorabilia to use on your Valentine. Class will be held Feb. 2 from 10 a.m. until noon. There is a $3 fee.

The 19th annual Youth Arts Show will be held March 3 through 14. On display will be artwork from students of the Cushing Public Schools and Lachenmeyer Arts Center.
