Smart Start plans free screening

Smart Start Payne County is hosting free screenings for children from newborns to age 18 at its Fifth Annual Most Excellent Family Adventure on Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Payne County Expo Center.

Available health screenings include vision, dental, hearing and body mass index, said Regina Hall, Smart Start Payne County executive director. In addition, 40 vendors will be on hand to give parents and children information on safety and health education.

“(The event is important) because we want to build a sense of community,” she said. “We want to prevent children from having difficulty in school by holding the screenings and identifying any problems.”

Last year, about 600 people went to the event, and Hall said she is expecting more than 750 people this year.

Stillwater Children’s Museum representatives will be at the event showing the museum’s “Journey Back in Time” exhibit about pioneers in the days of statehood, there will be a Kicker car and representatives talking about sound safety and the Cushing Air Evac team will be on hand to answer questions.

There also will be games and activities for the family as well as door prizes and fitness routine demonstrations, Hall said.
